The top three pieces are decorated using colored slip (liquid clay). The slip is painted on to a slab of wet clay. A stencil was used for the first two platters above. A reverse stencil (leaves were cut out and applied to the slab) was used for the third plate.

The first two pieces in the second row have real plants pressed into them. the third platter has glaze mixed with bubbles that are blown onto the piece.

The first two pieces in the third row use a technique called sgraffito. Colored slip or a pigmented underglaze is applied to the piece while the clay is still somewhat soft. I then use a sharp tool and incise the clay removing some of the colored clay and leaving the etched design. The large round platter  has a carved surface to allow the glaze to have different thicknesses and appearances.

The first platter int he last row has a water color effect by watering down the glaze and allowing it to run together. The other two plates are done with a base glaze and then dots of another glaze and, in the case of the last plate, a thrid glaze is applied as well.
